Summary
- Arte de las tres lenguas kakchiquel, quiché y tzutuhil (The art of three languages, Cakchikel, Quiché, and Tzutuhil) is a Mayan Indian language grammar and devotional handbook by Dominican Father Francisco Ximénez (1666-circa 1722), parish priest of the pueblo of Santo Tomás Chichicastenango (in present-day Guatemala), probably written between 1700 and 1703. Leaves 1-93 contain a Cakchikel-Quiché-Tzutuhil grammar. Leaves 94-119, the "Tratado Segundo de todo lo que debe saber un ministro para la buena administracion de estos naturales" (Second treaty of all that a minister must know for the good administration of these natives), contain religious material, including a copy of a letter of February 1580 from Father Alonso Noreña responding to doctrinal questions on the confessions of the Indians. This part of the manuscript also includes, in various combinations of Cakchikel, Quiché (or K'iche'), Tzutuhil, and Spanish, a confession; a catechism; important prayers; the Ten Commandments; explanations of the sacraments and of sins and virtues; the Beatitudes; and questions used in the administration of the sacraments of baptism, marriage, and the viaticum (the Eucharist as given to a person near to or in danger of death).
