.

Processing History
The processed portions of the James M. Goode collection were processed by Shanette
Harris and staff in the Prints and Photographs Division in the 1980s. This finding aid
contains unverified data from old container lists transcribed by Erin Ebert and Tori Cox
in 2020. Not all of the groups of material are described at the same level of detail.
Finding aid was encoded by Owen Ellis in 2020-2021.
Over a period of approximately five years, 1975-1979, James M. Goode, Curator of the
Smithsonian Building, assembled the over 2,000 photoprints and 700 copy negatives which
constitute LOT 11800. From this body of documentation he selected the several hundred
illustrations for his book,
Capital Losses
(Washington: Smithsonian Institution Press, 1979).
From 1979 until 1982, Mr. Goode and several assistants cataloged these materials,
producing cards identifying the subject, source, and reproduction rights for each
photograph. Gifts of these materials were made to the Library of Congress in a yearly
installments through 1982, when a Library employee organized LOT 11800, providing
complete captions for each photograph, and citing all applicable negative numbers.
Additional materials that form the James M. Goode collection not included in this
finding aid are listed below. For more information about service of these additional

Requesting Materials
For information about service in the Prints and Photographs Reading Room, including
obtaining copies, see ["Information for Researchers."]
To obtain copies of materials in LOT 11800, the following information will be useful in
completing the order forms: the captions for each image (provide the name of the
institution or person from whom Mr. Goode acquired it or obtained a copy) and a copy
negative number when available. Where Mr. Goode himself provided a copy negative, it is
numbered in one of two negative series:
- LC-G7 (5x7" film negatives)
- LC-G72 (8x10" film negatives)
Both negative series are in the Library's collections and can be used as the source for
obtaining copies. Please note that some prints with LC-G7 and LC-G72 series copy
negatives are captioned "restricted use". Permission to use prints from these negatives
must be obtained from the person or institution holding the rights to their
reproduction.
In regard to photoprints which cite the Library of Congress as the source institution,
an attempt has been made to note any existing Library of Congress negative numbers
(examples: Library of Congress negative number LC-USZ62-11111, LC-J71-2345, etc.).
Copies from these negatives can also be obtained where other restrictions do not
apply.
Finally, where no copy negative or original negative is available for a photoprint in
this collection, and where no restrictions have been placed upon its reproduction, a
copy can be made from the photoprint. Readers can also contact the owner of the original
item for copies.
