Nicolò Paganini was an Italian violinist,
violist, and composer known for his technical prowess and virtuosity. This collection
contains a significant amount of iconography depicting Paganini as well as other
composers and related objects and places. Other materials include manuscript and printed
music, correspondence, programs, publicity materials, personal papers, publications, and
clippings that document Paganini’s professional activities and personal life. Additional
catalogs, inventories, and other materials in the papers of Maia Bang Hohn provide
further information about the contents and history of the collection.
Acquisition Information
Purchases with Gertrude Clarke Whittall Foundation funds, 1944 and 1957
Gift, Elisabeth A. Bondy, March 11, 1949
Gift, Geraldine DeCourcy, October 1951
Gift, Thomas L. Fawick, 1962
Custodial History
The materials that Maia Bang Hohn assembled for a projected biography of Paganini
comprise the largest portion of the collection. Many of the papers and diaries were in
the possession of the Paganini family until 1910, at which point dealer Luigi
Bastianelli sold the materials at auction to Frankfurt dealer Joseph Baer. In 1927, V.
A. Heck of Vienna sold them to Hohn. The Music Division purchased her archive in 1944
from her husband, Charles Hohn, with funds from the Gertrude Clarke Whittall Foundation
and kept it as a distinct unit within the Gertrude Clarke Whittall Foundation
Collection.
Elisabeth Bondy donated sixteen items to the Library in March 11, 1949; Geraldine
DeCourcy donated a photograph in October 1951; and Thomas L. Fawick donated the Register
of Letters in 1962.
The Library purchased approximately fifty items, including correspondence and personal
papers, from the Tolozzi Librai in 1957 with funds from the Gertrude Clarke Whittall
Foundation.
Accruals
No further accruals are expected.
Processing History
Musicologist Warren Kirkendale inventoried the supplemental materials in the mid-1960s.
Wilda Heiss began processing and coordinating preservation treatments for materials in
the collection in the early to mid-1990s. Susan Clermont and Jungeun Elle Kim created a
detailed inventory in 2012 based exclusively on the catalog compiled by Maia Bang Hohn
and added information about the iconography. Jane Cross completed processing in 2021.
Cross, Melissa Capozio Jones, and Rachel McNellis coded the finding aid in 2021, based
largely on the 2012 inventory.

Scope and Content Note
The Gertrude Clarke Whittall Foundation Collection on Nicolò Paganini, a sub-collection
of the Gertrude Clarke Whittall Foundation Collection, spans the years 1810 to 1967 and
consists of iconography, music, correspondence, programs, publicity materials, personal
papers, publications, and clippings related to Paganini, most of which date from 1830 to
1840.
The [Iconography](NP01) series
consists of images in a variety of media that depict Paganini and other musicians, as
well as objects and places related to Paganini.
The [Music](NP02) series contains
manuscript and printed scores, parts, and sketches for works that Paganini and other
composers created.
The collection also contains a significant amount of [Correspondence](NP03) that other musicians, royalty,
organizations, friends, and family wrote to each other and to Paganini, as well as
letters in Paganini's hand and a small number of envelopes.
The [Programs and Publicity](NP04)
materials document the violinist's concerts in England, Germany, and Austria.
The collection contains many of Paganini's [Personal Papers](NP05), such as awards, contracts, financial papers,
invitations, notebooks, poetry, cards, and miscellaneous fragments.
The [Publications](NP06) series
includes books and magazine articles about Paganini's life and performance
technique.
Numerous [Clippings](NP07) include
reviews and advertisements for his performances across Europe.
In addition to these materials, the collection contains [Papers of Maia Bang Hohn](NP08) that provide information
about the materials she collected and their provenance.
Nearly every item in the Gertrude Clarke Whittall Foundation Collection on Nicolò
Paganini has been inventoried and assigned a number either by the collectors or Library
staff. Maia Bang Hohn was responsible for most of the "Catalog no." designations in her
collection. Approximately 60 uncataloged items from Hohn were later assigned "MBC misc."
numbers, which represent Maia Bang Catalog miscellaneous items. Materials donated by
Elisabeth A. Bondy were assigned a "Bondy no.," and items acquired from the Libreria
Tolozzi have "WF" ("Whittall Foundation") numbers.

Iconography, 1810-1926
(bulk 1830-1840)
1810-1926
(bulk
1830-1840)
This series contains images of Paganini, other people, objects, and places. The
materials include lithographs, engravings, watercolors, oil prints, pen drawings,
photographs, negatives, and other types of visual media that were created in
England, France, Italy, Germany, and Austria.
Portraits of Paganini comprise the majority of these materials, many of which are
simple busts or depict him either holding or playing the violin. In several images
he plays solely on one string, a technique for which he was widely known. In
others, Paganini plays with his violin tilted downward and close to the body,
enabling him to perform highly virtuosic passages.
In a small number of images, Paganini performs with other musicians, including
composer and close friend Gioachino Rossini, pianist Johann Baptist Cramer,
cellist Richard Lindley, double bassist Domenico Dragonetti, and violinist Nicolas
Mori. An original wash drawing depicts him playing outside the bedchamber of Maria
Anna Bacciochi, Napoleon Bonaparte’s sister. In another image, he accompanies
ballet dancer Marie Taglioni. Additional portraits show him in prison or on his
deathbed. Paganini inscribed two portraits in this series, including an engraved
half-portrait from 1830 in which he holds a violin and bow, and a pen drawing from
1832.
These materials also contain a substantial number of caricatures that show him
performing in concert halls, sawing blocks of wood, firing a cannon, or playing
the violin with a broomstick. Of note are the many images in which demons and
witches appear. This connection with evil creatures recalls the wide-spread legend
that Paganini sold his soul to the devil in exchange for remarkable skill and
talent. Although the result of ill health, those who saw him perform remarked that
his sunken cheeks, pale skin, and thin lips were further evidence of this
pact.
The second portion of this series contains portraits of other musicians, including
Archangelo Corelli, Gasparo Ghiretti, Franz Liszt, Gioachino Rossini, Louis Spohr,
Antonio Stradivari, Giuseppe Tartini, and Giovanni Barista Viotti. Additional
images display political figures, including Napoleon Bonaparte and Princess Elise
Bacciocci, Elisa the Grand Duchess of Tuscany. Numerous other images depict
Paganini’s son, Achille, and other relatives. Finally, there are images of
objects, including several instruments that Paganini owned, and locations in
Genoa, Nice, and Parma.
Arranged in four file units: Paganini, Portraits of Others, Objects, and
Locations.

Music, 1829-1935
1818-1933
This series consists of manuscript and printed scores, parts, sketches, and method
books for works that Paganini and other composers created between 1829 and 1935,
the majority of which date from 1818 to 1832. The manuscript scores for Paganini’s
Quartetto no. 11 in B major, Quartetto no. 12 in A minor, Quartetto no. 13 in F
major, and Quartetto no. 14 in A major are especially notable, as are a number of
sketches for some of his unpublished works. This series also includes published
copies of select variations, quadrilles, fantasies, and airs for violin that
Paganini composed.
The works by other composers include method books based on Paganini’s technique by
Carl Guhr and Roberto Mantovani, several fantasias that J. Moscheles dedicated to
Paganini, and T. B. Phipps's arrangements of six airs by Paganini.
Arranged alphabetically by composer and title therein.

Correspondence, 1822-1844
1822-1844
This series consists primarily of correspondence between Nicolò Paganini and
notable musicians, statesmen, royalty, organizations, friends, and family members.
It also contains a small number of envelopes. Some letters are accompanied by
receipts, contracts, rental slips, and legal documents regarding Paganini’s
estate.
Arranged in two subseries.
Letters to Paganini and Others,
1828-1844
1828-1844
This subseries consists of letters that musicians, statesmen, royalty,
organizations, friends, and family members wrote primarily to Nicolò Paganini.
Unless otherwise noted, items in this series are holograph letters addressed to
Paganini, including a substantial amount of correspondence from Luigi Guglielmo
Germi, his close friend and legal advisor.
A holograph letter from composer Gioachimo Rossini is also especially notable.
Paganini’s connections with other musicians and artists are further documented
in letters from violinists Carlo Bignami, composer Fermo Bellini, and scenic
painter Filippo Zafforini.
Also present are letters from royalty, including the King of Prussia Frederick
William III, the Duchess of Parma Marie-Louise, Princess Louise Radziwill of
Prussia, and Baron Anton von Doblhoff. Letters from the Berlin Institute for
the Blind, Children’s Hospital Committee in London, the Committee of Polish
Exiles in London, the Musical Society of London, and the New Musical Fund,
among other organizations, offer further insight into Paganini’s professional
associations. His familial relationships are also documented by a small number
of letters from sisters Nicoletta Ghisolfi and Domenica Paganini.
A photocopy of a letter from Princess Maria Luigi to Luigi Guglielmo Germi that
legitimizes Paganini’s natural son, Achille, is of special interest. Other
notable items are those from Achille Paganini to Marchese Lorenzo Nicolo
Pareto, and letters from Paolo Lusardi to Luigi Guglielmo Germi.
Arranged alphabetically by correspondent.

Letters from Paganini, 1822-1840
1822-1840
This subseries consists of letters that Nicolò Paganini wrote to musicians,
statesmen, royalty, organizations, friends, and family members. These materials
are written in Paganini's hand unless otherwise noted. A letter to the Duchy of
Parma pertaining to the reorganization of the Ducal Orchestra of Parma is
notable. Correspondence with German actress Amalie Haizinger, her husband and
operatic tenor Anton Haizinger, and composer Antonio Pacini document Paganini's
connections within the broader cultural milieu. Additional letters to Director
of the Musee de Parma and the Teatri S. Agostino in Genoa document some of his
performing activities. Other notable recipients include Paganini's friend and
lawyer Luigi Guglielmo Germi, and his son, Achille Paganini. Approximately half
of these letters are unidentified, some of which are incomplete.
Arranged alphabetically by recipient and chronologically therein.

Programs and Publicity, 1828-1937
1828-1937
This series is comprised largely of printed programs and playbills for concerts at
which Paganini performed between 1828 and 1834. It contains a considerable number
of materials from his numerous performances in England, including those at the
King’s Theatre in London, the Theatre Royal in Covent Garden, and other venues in
Brighton, Bath, Drury Lane, and Vauxhall. His appearances at the Royal
Redouten-Saale and Stuttgarter Hof-Theatre in Germany, as well as the
Kärnthnerthor-Theater in Vienna, are also documented. One hand-written program
from an unidentified concert in 1828 is also notable. The series contains a small
number of programs and promotional posters for performances that took place
between 1865 and 1937, after Paganini’s death, in Edinburg, Piccadilly, and
London. These concerts and stage performances featured works that other composers
dedicated to Paganini, including an opera and operetta.

Personal Papers, 1827-1847
1827-1847
This series consists of awards, contracts, financial papers, invitations,
notebooks, poetry, cards, and miscellaneous fragments pertaining to Paganini’s
professional activities and personal life. The so-called Secret Red Notebook is
well known and contains extensive biographical information, tour dates, financial
notes, address lists, prescriptions, recipes, a laundry list, and poetry. Paganini
never allowed others to view the notebook, which resulted in the false assumption
that it contained the key to mastering his unparalleled technique. An account book
and two pocket calendars are also valuable sources of information about his
European tour.
Among the financial papers are bank statements, receipts, and records documenting
the number of seats sold at his concerts. A number of awards, two of which
Frederick William III, King of Prussia, signed, further confirm his widespread
popularity across Italy and Austria. Invitations for performances in Hanover,
Magdeburg, Breslau, Mannheim, Karlsruhe, Paris, and America also attest to his
international renown. Additional items document his tenure with the Parma
Orchestra, as well as his final illness and death.
Arranged alphabetically by material type.

Publications, 1830-1967
1830-1967
This series contains books and magazine articles about Paganini that were
published between 1830 and 1967, although most date from 1892 to 1938. These
materials were published in multiple languages, including English, German, French,
Italian, and Norwegian. While biographies constitute the majority of these
publications, they also contain a script for Count Alfred Hessenstein's play Paganini, Emil Kross's guide to performing Paganini's
24 Cappricio, and Harold Spivacke's article [
Paganiniana,
] which provides an overview of the history of the Library of Congress
collection and its contents. Other publications focus on Paganini's stage
presence, physical behaviors, and virtuosity. Pietro Berri, Siegfried Eberhardt,
François-Joseph Fetis, Georg Harrys, Julius Kapp, Adolfo Artur Kuhnert, Renée de
Saussine, and Jules Siber are among the other significant authors in this
series.
Arranged alphabetically by author and title therein.

Clippings, 1818-1939
1818-1939
This series consists of newspaper clippings, the majority of which are
advertisements and reviews for Paganini’s performances between 1828 and 1834.
Other clippings include poetry, biographical sketches, accounts of Paganini’s
lawsuits, obituaries, and a copy of his will. In addition, several price lists for
concerts, receipts, and reports of profits offer insight into the financial
aspects of his performances. A few clippings that date from after his death
contain biographical and concert reviews, several of which perpetuate the myth
that he made a deal with the devil in exchange for his talents.
Arranged chronologically and then by catalog number.
