Related Material
Many Library of Congress divisions have special collections that include materials
related to Ted Shawn, Ruth St. Denis, or the Denishawn company. Photographs,
programs, and correspondence of Ruth St. Denis and other relevant material can be
found in the Music Division's [Oliver Daniel Papers].
[ The Elizabeth Sprague
Coolidge Foundation Collection] and the [Serge Koussevitzky
Archive] both include correspondence with Ted Shawn. The [Grace
McCrae Papers] and the [Anne Douglas Papers] each offer
materials relating to their careers as Denishawn dancers. In the Prints and
Photographs Division, photographs of Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn, and her Denishawn
dancers are especially plentiful in the collection of photographer Arnold Genthe. To
search for the Genthe and other photographs related to Denishawn, use the [Prints and
Photographs Online Catalog (PPOC)].
The Library of Congress is rich in materials that document the life and career of
American modern dance pioneer Martha Graham. Collections housed in the Music
Division include: the [ Aaron Copland

For collections that contain a large amount of dance-related photographic materials,
the Music Division houses the [Larry Colwell Dance
Photographs] and holds additional photographs in many other dance
collections.
Among the Music Division's digital materials is the online collection titled [Martha Graham at the
Library of Congress], for which items from numerous Graham-related
collections have been digitized.

Biographical Note
Cesari Foni Kellinger was born April 5, 1922, in Sansepolcro, Italy. She attended
the Regina Elena School for women, and later earned her doctorate in German
languages and literature at the University of Florence. In 1944, she attended
Verdi’s Aida in Florence and met Josef Kellinger, a
soldier stationed abroad with the United States Army. They married in 1947 in
Austria and moved to New York.
During the 1970s, Kellinger began her career as a bookseller and vendor of
antiquarian papers. Her business specialized in books about historical women and
sculptors from 1600 to the present. She also offered monographs and catalogs about
artists from Portugal, Spain, France, England, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy,
Scandinavia, and the United States. In addition to her work as a bookseller,
Kellinger created educational recordings for foreign-language learning. She also
published two articles: “Rosa Luxembourg and Leo Jogisches” (Monthly Review 25.6, 1973) and “Collecting Books in Modern Dance” (AB Bookman’s Yearbook, 1982). She died in Chambersburg,
Pennsylvania, on October 10, 2014.
The Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution purchased the Thomas
Crawford papers (1941–1856) from her in 1985. In 2004, Kellinger donated more than
500 books to the National Museum of Women in the Arts, and in 2011 donated about 220
dance items to the Library of Congress.
Scope and Content Note
The Cesi Kellinger Collection of Dance Materials consists of approximately 220
dance-related items that date between 1842 and 1994. These items include photographs
and illustrations, books, performance programs and promotional materials, articles
and clippings, and correspondence. They offer a glimpse into the world of dance in
nineteenth-century London and in the United States, with an emphasis on the rise of
modern dance during the early twentieth century. The collection is organized into
four series according to type of material.
The [Programs](CK01) series
encompasses performance programs and playbills dating from 1926 to 1994 that
document numerous national and international dance companies, including the Martha
Graham Dance Company, Denishawn, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, and some of their
famous contemporaries such as Kurt Jooss, Alwin Nikolais, and Charles Weidman. A
small number of early Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo programs are included. Items in
the [Correspondence](CK02)
series, which date from 1931 to 1994, include several hand-written letters of
prominent modern dancers Hanya Holm, Mary Wigman, and Ted Shawn, along with
correspondence between Cesi Kellinger and other antiquarian dealers about modern
dance figures. The [Photographs
and Prints](CK03) series divides the image materials into two categories. The
photographs focus on the productions of Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, founders of
the Denishawn dance company, from 1842 to 1974. The prints subseries includes rare
illustrations and photogravures, dating between 1842 and 1929, that portray
prominent nineteenth-century ballerinas and dance scenes. As most of the prints are
illustrations published in newspapers or serials, the illustrations are often
accompanied by reviews of performances or essays on the featured performers. The
[Publications](CK04) series
includes books, conference proceedings, exhibition catalogs, clippings, articles,
and promotional materials dating between 1859 and 1991. These materials focus most
heavily on the personal and professional activities of Ted Shawn, Ruth St. Denis,
and Martha Graham.

Programs, 1926-1994
1926-1994
Programs and playbills for the performances of national and international
dance companies between 1926 and 1994 constitute this series. The series
contains a program for a performance of early modern dance artists Ted Shawn
and Ruth St. Denis, who with their Denishawn dance company exercised
significant influence upon the careers of Martha Graham and many other
prominent modern dancers. The later career of Ted Shawn is well represented
by programs from the renowned Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival between 1949 and
1973, which Shawn founded and directed until his death in 1974. Of special
note are numerous programs for performances of the Martha Graham Dance
Company between 1961 and 1994. The collection has a range of outstanding
programs documenting other distinguished ballet companies and modern dance,
especially strong in the years from the 1930s to the 1970s.

The Photographs and Prints series is divided into two subseries: The
Photographs subseries contains a significant number of black-and-white
photos and film publicity shots related to the productions of Ruth St. Denis
and Ted Shawn dating from 1906 to 1974. It includes a rare photo in which
St. Denis dances in her first choreographed work Radha (1906). This collection also includes photos of her solo
in The Gold Madonna, most likely during her
first performance in 1934, as well as performing The
White Madonna in 1936. Other photographed productions include
The Gift of Eternal Life, an Indo-Persian
Legend, which renowned American artist Albert Herter wrote and
produced in 1929, Greek Veil Plastique Dance
(1917), Legend of the Peacock (1919), White Jade (1926), and Nautch (1908). Other items
include headshots of St. Denis, images of Ruth Denis with Ted Shawn, and
photographs taken in non-performance settings.
The Prints subseries consists primarily of illustrations on dance-related
topics from magazines and newspapers dating from 1842 to 1929, many of which
accompany essays or performance reviews. It also contains two photogravures
depicting dance lessons by the Gebbie & Husson Photogravure Company. One
particularly rare item is Jacques-Émile Blanche’s essay "Léon Bakst dans le
Ballet Russe" in the French serial L'Illustration (1927). Léon Bakst, famed costume and set
designer for Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, provided watercolor
illustrations for the essay. This subseries also contains several portraits
of renowned dancers Fanny Cerrito, Sofia Fuoco, Carlotta Pochini, and Marie
Taglioni.

Publications, 1859-1991
1859-1991
The Publications series, which encompasses books, clippings, articles, and
promotional materials that date between 1859 and 1991, is organized by the
four formats.
Among the books are volumes published by Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis, dance
manuals, biographies and histories, exhibition catalogs, and conference
proceedings. Many of these works contain exquisite reproductions of visual
materials related to dance. Two items, including a rare tour guide to India,
contain bookplates indicating that they were owned by Denishawn. Five of the
books are housed with the Kellinger Dance Collection. The remaining 20 items
have been relocated to the reference shelves of the Music Division’s
Performing Arts Reading Room (PARR) or can be requested at the PARR
circulation desk.
The articles include several essays written by distinguished modern dancers
and cultural commentators. The newspaper clippings include items about
Martha Graham, Ruth St. Denis, and the Stuttgart Ballet. Promotional
materials consist of brochures of booking agents, as well as flyers and cards
used to advertise performances, workshops, and other dance events. These
items focus primarily on Martha Graham, Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn, and their
dance companies.
Arranged by format and alphabetically therein by author or subject, as appropriate.
