The American Play Company / Century Play Company was a conglomerate publishing house that represented many of the most prominent American playwrights and dramatists of the 20th century. The scripts and business papers in the collection document numerous aspects of American theater production history, including author representation, show production, publishing, and licensing for television, film, radio, and stock productions. The script library notably includes five working copies of The Glass Menagerie (1944) by Tennessee Williams and early performance drafts of Eugene O'Neill's Anna Christie (1921), Mourning Becomes Electra (1931), and Strange Interlude (1923). The collection also highlights several unpublished, unproduced works by female playwrights, such as Harriet Ford and Margery Benton Cooke.

Organizational History
The roots of the American Play Company go back to the 1880s, when Elizabeth Marbury (1856-1933) became the protégé of theatrical impresario Daniel Frohman and convinced Frances Hodgson Burnett, author of
Little Lord Fauntleroy
(1886), to let her act as her exclusive business representative. Marbury, through her corporation Elizabeth Marbury, Inc., became the sole representative of the French Society of Authors, a trade union for professional writers, as well as the agent of such literary luminaries as George Bernard Shaw, Edmond Rostand, W. Somerset Maugham, J.M. Barrie, Arthur Wing Pinero, Rachel Crothers, George M. Cohan, Jerome Kern, Guy Bolton, and P.G. Wodehouse, among others.
In 1914, Marbury decided to merge her company with Selwyn & Co, a competing theatrical agency, to form the American Play Company. By 1930, the American Play Company was actually an amalgam of Selwyn & Co., Elizabeth Marbury, Inc., The John Rumsey Play Company, the original American Play Company, and The De Mille Company. John Rumsey took over the day-to-day management of the business from 1930 until the 1960s.
In 1950, Rumsey negotiated a merger between American Play Company and Century Play Company, a competing agency whose roots are less clear than those of the American Play Company. Century Play Company was founded at the beginning of the 20th century, and may have been a subsidiary of the Schubert organization until that company, feeling governmental anti-trust pressure, spun the agency off as its own entity. It was run by James Thatcher and Thomas F. Kane; Thatcher died in 1930, and Kane ran the business until his death in 1950, after which the company was sold to American Play Company.
In the early 1960s, the company was purchased by Sheldon Abend. Abend's interest in the issue of intellectual property was such that a significant Supreme Court case on copyright, Stewart v. Abend, bears his name. Abend argued, and the Supreme Court agreed, that widows and heirs of deceased authors should recoup royalties after the death of the original author and once the copyright was renewed by the heirs.
Scope and Content Note
Materials from the American / Century Play Company Scripts and Business Papers span the years 1894-2006, with the bulk of the items dating from 1915-1998. The collection is a rich resource for scripts, mostly from the first half of the twentieth century. Many of these may be early drafts of major works, often annotated and with additional related materials laid in. In addition, there is information on the business of theater and film during the latter half of the century from the period when Abend owned the company.
The majority of script materials consists of complete typescripts, some never published or in early drafts, and a few published scripts, owned by the American/Century play companies, or “sides” (compilations of the lines and cues for individual characters). Many of these materials bear annotations in the hands of actors, directors, writers, and production managers. Laid in materials include lighting and prop lists, stage layouts, character and costume descriptions, synopses, and other materials. Particularly notable items include: five working copies of
The Glass Menagerie
(1944) by Tennessee Williams, several of which are production copies and early drafts with Williams' own edits and annotations; early performance drafts of Eugene O'Neill's
Anna Christie
(1921),
Mourning Becomes Electra
(1931), and
Strange Interlude
(1923), several plays by George Bernard Shaw, and librettos for early Jerome Kern musicals. There are also a surprising number of scripts by women playwrights. Many scripts may have been submitted for consideration but never produced. Scripts are organized alphabetically by last name of the primary author, then by title therein. If a particular work has multiple authors, those names are also listed.
Business papers in the collection consist mostly of correspondence with playwrights, rights holders, legal representatives, and producing organizations, as well as contracts, agreements, and research on copyrights. The materials deal largely with plays, including negotiating revivals, stock productions, and licensing for television and film productions, and a significant amount relating to foreign producing rights. There is also material from a subsidiary company, the Author's Research Company. Files are organized alphabetically, mostly based on how the American Play Company labeled the files themselves. This includes by author (by the author they represented, in cases of works by several authors), work or subject title, and production studio or company.
