Scope and Content Note
The DuPree African American Pentecostal Collection spans the years 1861-2020, with the
bulk of the material dating from 1980 to 2010. The collection reflects the collecting
efforts of historian and librarian Sherry Sherrod DuPree, and her interests in
preserving and documenting many aspects of African American religious and cultural
history, especially regarding the history of the Pentecostal Church and the African
American community in the American South and Florida specifically. The collection is
organized into four series: [African American Christian
Organizations](ChristianOrgs), [African American History and
Culture](HistoryandCulture), [DuPree Personal File](PersonalFile), and [Oversize](Oversize).
The collection documents DuPree’s efforts to preserve and promote African American
religious and cultural history chief among them, the practices of the African American
Pentecostal Church and the activities of Pentecostal and Holiness congregations across
the southern United States, as well as those of other African American Christian
denominations. The collection comprises material DuPree actively solicited from church
members and material she created or collected directly in the course of her own research
and scholarship. The collection has a particular emphasis on the Church of God in Christ
(COGIC) and documents many COGIC congregations and nearly one hunderd years of COGIC
conventions. In addition to aspects of African American religious history, the
collection also broadly documents African American history in the Gainesville, Florida,
area and wider Alachua County and Levy County vicinity and chronicles DuPree’s work to
preserve the stories, memories, and experiences of otherwise hidden members of the
African American community in which she lived. This includes DuPree’s successful efforts
to establish Rosewood, Florida, as a Florida Heritage Landmark site in memory of the
Rosewood massacre of 1923, her work to record the contributions of enslaved people and
African American laborers on the Dudley Farm in Newberry, Florida, and to promote
tourism of Black historic sites across Florida and the American South. The digital
content in the collection is particularly robust and includes several oral history
interviews with survivors of the Rosewood massacre, oral histories recorded as part of
the University of Florida's Samuel Proctor Oral History Program, and many sermons,
prayers, and gospel music pieces. Researchers should note that as DuPree’s areas of
interest and activity were varied, so too is the collection’s content.
The collection’s series are listed and briefly described below. A fuller description of
each series and a list of its contents can be accessed in the series descriptions within
the container list.
The [African American Christian Organizations](ChristianOrgs) series
comprises religious ephemera, publications, and reference materials collected by DuPree
for use in projects related to the history of African American Christian religious
life.
The [African American History and Culture](HistoryandCulture) series
contains material largely related to DuPree’s activities and efforts to document and
promote African American history in the Gainesville, Florida, area and southern United
States.
The [DuPree Personal File](PersonalFile) contains material related to
DuPree’s family history and genealogy, her professional career as a librarian, and her
many speaking engagements and lectures.
The remaining series contains [Oversize](Oversize) material.

African American Christian
Organizations, 1911-2020
1911-2020
The African American Christian Organizations series comprises religious ephemera,
publications, and reference materials collected by DuPree for use in projects
related to the history of African American Christian religious life. The majority
of this series pertains to individual church congregations, most of which are
Pentecostal or Holiness churches, but a large number of Baptist, Methodist, or
other predominately African American denominations also are represented. The vast
majority of these congregations are located across the American South and in
Florida specifically. Of particular note within the Congregations grouping are the
large volume of church service and funeral programs, of which Church of God in
Christ congregations are heavily represented. The Conventions grouping chiefly
contains convention, conference, and annual meeting programs and related
promotional materials, and pertain to broader denominations or other religious
associations, of which the Church of God in Christ is similarly well represented.
The Publications grouping includes denominational newsletters, and pamphlets, as
well as more general religious newspapers and periodicals, largely from the
American South. Reference materials are chiefly published and unpublished
secondary sources related to the history of specific denominations, religious
figures, or significant events, with particular emphasis on the history of African
American women in the church. A smaller amount of materials document the work of
religious educational programs and schools, as well as local, regional, national,
and international ministry organizations. Many writings and projects DuPree
conducted on the topics of the Pentecostal Holiness movement and prominent church
leaders also are included in this series.
Material types include audio files, video files, word document files, pamphlets,
flyers, brochures, correspondence, church bulletins, church service programs,
funeral programs, sermons, prayers, clippings, meeting minutes, notes,
photographs, publications, and conference, convention, and meeting programs. A
relatively small number of objects also are found in this series; most of which
are commemorative buttons, ribbons, tote bags, and other ephemera created for
particular conventions or celebrations.
Arranged alphabetically by material type or topic. File structure of the digital
content maintained as received.

African American History and
Culture File, 1892-2019
1892-2019
The African American History and Culture series contains material largely related
to DuPree’s activities and efforts to document and promote African American
history in the Gainesville, Florida, area and southern United States. The series
heavily documents DuPree’s work to preserve the stories, memories, and experiences
of otherwise hidden members of the African American community in which she lived.
Oral history interviews with survivors, tour itineraries, brochures, photographs,
documentary films and video files, and clippings document DuPree’s work to
establish Rosewood, Florida, as a Florida Heritage Landmark site in memory of the
Rosewood massacre of 1923. Research files, including census, marriage, and deed
records, project reports, photographs, and oral history interview transcripts,
document DuPree’s work to chronicle the lives and contributions of enslaved people
and laborers on the Dudley Farm in Newberry, Florida. Conference programs,
interviews with conference panelists, photographs, video files, African American
heritage tour programs, and itineraries relate to DuPree’s involvement in the
UNESCO Transatlantic Slave Trade, Florida Center. Finally, oral history video and
audio files as recorded by the University of Florida's Samuel Proctor Oral History
Program document Black community members’ memories of the Civil Rights Movement,
integration, and the inauguration of President Barack Obama. DuPree’s interest and
research into gospel music also features prominently in this series. Sheet music,
songbooks, audio files, writings and lectures prepared by DuPree, as well as
material related to an exhibit she curated also are included. Finally, several
files related to tourism of Black historic sites, cultural institutions,
businesses, events, and festivals are included in this series and are organized by
geographical location.
Material types include audio files, video files, brochures, photographs, printed
matter, writings, lectures, songbooks, sheet music, hand fans, clippings,
periodicals, and research material.
Arranged alphabetically by material type or topic. File structure of the digital
content maintained as received.

DuPree Personal File, 1861-2019
1861-2019
The DuPree Personal File contains material related to DuPree’s family history and
genealogy, her professional career as a librarian, and her many speaking
engagements and lectures. DuPree’s family papers make up the bulk of this series
and include material collected or created by her husband, Herbert C. DuPree,
children, parents, especially her mother, Mary Elouise Sherrod, siblings, and
other relatives. Also of note in this series is a small group of papers detailing
the activities of Idella Taylor Hall, a prominent member of the Williams Temple
Church of God in Christ in Gainesville, Florida, and her involvement in the Court
of Calanthe, Golden Star No. 613, an African American women-run fraternal
organization. DuPree’s pursuits as a professional are well-documented in this
series and include correspondence, conference materials, syllabi and course
materials for courses she taught at Santa Fe Community College, Gainesville,
Florida, brochures and posters advertising her lectures and speaking engagements,
clippings detailing her work as a librarian and historian, as well as material
documenting Displays for Schools, LLC, a business she founded. Digital files in
this series include images, text documents, and HMTL files for informational
websites DuPree created, and an oral history interview recorded in 2011. Computer
backup files also are found in this series and include many image files, text
documents, and PowerPoint presentations DuPree prepared for her various
professional endeavors including her work with Rosewood, Florida, Santa Fe
Community College, Displays for Schools, LLC, among other writings. Writing files
presumably created by Herbert C. DuPree as well as DuPree's sons are also
represented. Researchers should note that DuPree’s many writings and projects are
included in the [African American Christian
Organizations](ChristianOrgs) series and [African American
History and Culture ](HistoryandCulture)series and are organized according to the topic they
address.
Material types include correspondence, brochures, clippings, text document files,
JPEG image files, video files, and printed matter.
Arranged alphabetically by material type or topic. File structure of the digital
content maintained as received.
