Scope and Content Note
The writings of Arthur Louis Kroeber (1876-1960) span the years 1923-1957, with the bulk
of the material concentrated in the period 1940-1948. The collection consists mainly of
drafts of Kroeber’s 1948 revision of his seminal work
Anthropology: Race,
Language, Culture, Psychology, Prehistory
, first published in 1923. Included
in addition to handwritten, typed, and annotated pages are cover notes to the material
and revised tear sheets from the 1923 edition. The cover notes describe some of the
revision as produced in 1940. In his gift of the manuscript to the Library, Kroeber
called the text “my best written book.”
Also in the collection are handwritten and typewritten drafts of
Style and
Civilizations
, published in 1957.
