The collection of J. O. Halliwell-Phillipps, scholar and librarian, was transferred to
the Library of Congress from the Smithsonian Institution in 1866
Processing History
The Halliwell-Phillipps Collection was housed by preservation staff of the Library circa
1975. The finding aid was revised in 2015. The finding aid was updated in 2023 by Maria
Farmer as part of a division-wide remediation project by the Inclusive Description
Working Group.

Biographical Note
James Orchard Halliwell, who assumed the name Halliwell-Phillipps through the family
connections from his marriage to his first wife, Henrietta Phillipps, in 1872, was born
in London and educated at Jesus College, Cambridge. An antiquarian and collector and
researcher of English literature, he edited travel volumes, romances, nursery books and
fairy tales, and other works, but was most notable for his scholarship and publications
relating to the life and writings of William Shakespeare. He died January 3, 1889, and
was buried in East Sussex.
Scope and Content Note
The collection of James Orchard Halliwell-Phillipps (1820-1889) spans the years
1576-1852, with the bulk of the material concentrated in the period 1632-1792. The
collection consists of bound volumes of bills, accounts, and inventories compiled by
Halliwell-Phillipps for an unfinished work on the history of prices in England between
1650 and 1750. The last volume, Some Account of a Collection of
Several Thousand Bills, Accounts, and Inventories, Illustrating the History of Prices
Between the Years 1650 and 1750, printed for private circulation in 1852,
contains a descriptive account of the collection as arranged by Halliwell-Phillipps and
received and housed by the Library.
