Scope and Content Note
The papers of Shirley Mount Hufstedler (1925- ) span the years
1979-1981, with the bulk from 1980 to 1981. The collection consists of
photocopied duplicates and positive microfilm rather than original items and
documents Hufstedler's service as secretary of education in the administration
of Jimmy Carter from 1979 to 1981. Included is correspondence, memoranda, and
speeches and statements pertaining to legislation, policy issues, and the
promotion of educational programs. The letters and memoranda on microfilm (the
location of the original material is unknown) pertain chiefly to Hufstedler's
thirteen-month tenure in organizing and staffing the Education Department,
preparing the department's budget, and promoting legislative initiatives such
as the Youth Act. The decision memoranda consist of memoranda from staff to the
secretary concerning policy matters requiring a decision by Hufstedler.
Attached to a letter from Adele M. Scheele in the correspondence file is an
interview in which Hufstedler comments on her early life, judicial career, and
cabinet position.
