The Frances Carpenter Collection Relating to Frank G. Carpenter, author, geographer,
and journalist, was given to the Library of Congress by Frances Carpenter (Mrs. Frances
Carpenter Huntington) in 1969.
Processing History
The Frances Carpenter Collection Relating to Frank G. Carpenter was arranged and
described in 1975 by H. Swanson. The collection was partially reprocessed and the
finding aid revised in 2010 by Melinda K. Friend. The finding aid was updated in 2023 by
Maria Farmer as part of a division-wide remediation project by the Inclusive Description
Working Group.

Scope and Content Note
The Frances Carpenter Collection Relating to Frank G. Carpenter (1855-1924) spans the
years 1875-1960, with the bulk of the collection dating from 1883-1924.
The collection consists primarily of scrapbooks containing clippings of Frank G.
Carpenter's articles and columns, plus additional scrapbooks of clippings about his
lecture tours, work in Washington, D.C., and his death in China. The material is related
to the book
Carp's Washington
, arranged and edited by Carpenter's daughter, Frances Carpenter (1890-1972).
The bulk of the collection forms her research for that book. There is also some
correspondence between Frances Carpenter and the
Evening Star
(Washington, D.C.) newspaper. Another scrapbook contains clippings of reviews
of
Carp's Washington
, and there is also a file of illustrations proposed but not used for that
publication. Of interest is an autograph collection of people with whom Frank G.
Carpenter corresponded including Calvin Coolidge, Warren G. Harding, Herbert Hoover,
Alexander Graham Bell, Frederick Douglass, and Booker T. Washington.
