Scope and Content Note
The papers of H. W. Halleck (1815-1872) consist of a military
notebook, drafts of telegrams by Halleck, letters received, and a fragment of a
manuscript "A Review of European Armies in 1792," translated from the French of
General Antoine Henri Jomini. Although the papers range in date from 1843 to
1896, nearly all are dated 1862, principally in February and March, and relate
almost exclusively to Halleck’s command of the army departments of the
Missouri and Mississippi in that year. Topics include the treatment of surgeons
on the field of battle, Ulysses S. Grant's capture of Fort Donelson, and
conscription.
Correspondents include Don Carlos Buell, George W. Cullum, Samuel
Ryan Curtis, John A. Dix, Ulysses S. Grant, Abraham Lincoln, George Brinton
McClellan, Montgomery C. Meigs, Benjamin M. Prentiss, John McAllister
Schofield, Thomas Alexander Scott, William T. Sherman, Frederick Steele, George
Stoneman, William Kerley Strong, Lorenzo Thomas, and Z. B. Tower.
