Scope and Content Note
The United States Congress Senate Committee on the Budget Oral History
Project collection consists of interviews conducted by committee staff in 2006.
The interviews contributed to the production of Senate Document 109-24,
Committee on the Budget, 1974-2006
, and provide insight
into the history of the committee and the federal budget process. Those
interviewed include Stephen E. Bell, John J. Conway, William G. Dauster, John
L. Hilley, G. William Hoagland, Hazen Marshall, John T. McEvoy, Carole McGuire,
and Larry Stein. The interviews document the committee’s establishment in 1974
through 2004 and provide information on the committee’s operation and
organization, relations with other committees, committee chairpersons, and its
dealings with various presidential administrations. They also document the
evolution of budget legislation and history and include stories that add detail
to the committee’s history.
