The papers of Hildegard Thompson, author, educator, and government official, were given to the Library of Congress in 1995 by Bonna Holzheimer.
The papers of Hildegard Thompson were arranged and described in 1996. The finding aid was revised in 2009 by Karen Linn Femia. The finding aid was updated in 2023 by Maria Farmer as part of a division-wide remediation project by the Inclusive Description Working Group.
Some photographs have been transferred to the Prints and Photographs Division where they are identified as part of the Hildegard Thompson Papers.

Hildegard Steerstedter (later Hildegard Thompson) was born January 13, 1901 in DePauw, Indiana. She taught in Harrison County, Ind., schools from 1921-1930; was a teacher and textbook writer with the Bureau of Education in the Philippine Islands, 1931-1936; and served in various positions relating to education, including chief of Bureau of Education with the U.S. Department of Interior's Bureau of Indian Affairs between 1937 and 1965. She died in 1983.
The papers of Hildegard Thompson (1901-1983) span the years 1951-1974 and consist of book drafts, articles, correspondence, photographs, and printed matter, all concerning education of Native Americans, especially Diné (Navajo) schools, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
