  • Ligin's work is based on letters he wrote for "Russkie vedemosti" in 1911. These letters were quick notes about what he saw and heard on his journey across the Russian Far East from Irkutsk to China. Ligin passed through Blagoveshchensk, Khabarovsk, Harbin and Port Amur. The book gives general descriptions of the areas through which he travelled and also talks about settlers and colonialism, trade, the construction of the Amur Railroad and relations with the Chinese and Japanese, particularly in Manchuria.
