Summary

  • This dataset is an export of transcriptions for 5,239 images from the Wm. Oland Bourne Papers created by volunteers participating in the Library of Congress crowdsourcing program By the People (https://crowd.loc.gov) campaign, Civil War Soldiers: "Disabled but not disheartened”. It contains text created by volunteers through a transcription and review process, volunteer-created tags, digital collections metadata, and metadata representing the arrangement of the items in the By the People platform, Concordia.
  • The dataset includes transcriptions and data generated from the pages in the By the People campaign Civil War Soldiers: "Disabled but not disheartened” (https://crowd.loc.gov/campaigns/civil-war-soldiers-disabled-but-not-disheartened/). The campaign consisted of a selection of then online images of digitized content from the Wm. Oland Bourne Papers. The transcription campaign included all Left-hand Penmanship contest materials and Civil War reminiscences by soldiers and sailors in Central Park Hospital, New York, 1864-1865. As editor of the periodical The Soldier's Friend, Bourne sponsored two contests in 1865-1867 in which Union soldiers and sailors who lost their right arms by disability or amputation during the Civil War were invited to submit samples of their penmanship using their left hands. The transcribed materials include correspondence and broadsides concerning the contests, many of the penmanship entries submitted, and three autograph books of reminiscences Bourne collected from patients at Central Park Hospital, where he served as a chaplain. See the Bourne digital collection for all available online items for this collection, as well as contextual information, such as a timeline, an essay on the history of the penmanship contests, and bibliographic resources (http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.mss/collmss.ms000043).
  • Note: This dataset may contain UNICODE characters or lengthy transcriptions which may display incorrectly in some spreadsheet editors.
