Contents

  • Leaf 1. Opening page of the Lectionary. Half-page ornamental headpiece with geometric and floral designs in bright colors, with some gold, and two confronted birds above the upper frame. An arabesque, also in brilliant colors, occupies the full length of the page. The lower right corner of the leaf is torn off. The text is the reading for Nawasard 1 (= August 11) the Feast of John the Baptist and of St. Athagines. The initial of the opening line represents St. George slaying the dragon, and the first line of the text consists of zoomorphic and ornate letters in brilliant colors; the second and third line are alternately in red and blue erkatʻagir ["iron-clad" -- used for inscriptions], followed by five lines in bolorgir [rounded]. The verso of the leaf has the continuation of the text in two columns of 38 lines each. -- Leaf 2. Opening page of one of the major divisions of the Lectionary: Areg 16 (= March 24) on which day is commemorated "Easter and Feast of the Resurrection of Christ, written by the Vardapet Elisaeus." The upper half has a rectangular, ornate headpiece with geometric and floral designs in brilliant colors, also some gold. In the margin a large arabesque occupies the full length of the page. The initial of the opening line of the text consists of a large ornate capital in brilliant colors, and the first line is formed by zoomorphic letters, also in brilliant colors. The second and third lines are alternately in red and blue erkatʻagir, and the rest of the page in red and black bolorgir. The verso of this leaf has a continuation of the text in black bolorgir on two columns of 38 lines each. -- Leaf 3. Full-page miniature representing the Resurrection of Christ, standing within clouds above the sarcophagus and holding a bannered cross, against a gold background; also two angels drawn one above the other. In the lower right margin the number 379 B is written in pencil; this is probably the number of the folio. The verso of the leaf is blank, except for the quire number 34 written in the lower margin. -- Leaf 4. Full-page miniature representing the Adoration of the Magi painted in brilliant colors. The Virgin Mary is seated on the left, holding the infant Jesus; Joseph stands above Mary in the upper left corner. One of the Magi is kneeling before Mary and offering his gift; the other two Magi are standing above and holding their gifts. Two animals are placed in the lower right corner and another in the lower center. The verso has 38 lines of text, written on one column, commemorating the Nativity of Jesus; the second column is blank. In the lower margin of the second column the number 238 is written in pencil; probably the folio number. -- Leaves 5 and 6. The front of the first of these two attached leaves contains the reading for Nawasard 4 (= August 14), commemorating the Feast of Shoghakat [Feast of the Apparition at Holy Ejmiatsin to St. Gregory the Illuminator]. The reading is written in large bolorgir on two columns of 38 lines each. The verso of leaf five has a miniature in the margin between the two columns, painted in brilliant colors, portraying St. Gregory the Illuminator, and the composition includes a church with three domes, each with a gold cross on top. The front and the verso of Leaf 6 have the continuation of the text written on two columns of 38 lines each. The verso has a marginal miniature representing the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, with two apostles and a woman in mourning.
