  • Unsigned clipping of newspaper galley proof from unidentified source of letter to the editor by Theodore Dwight addessed from No. 62 Harrison St., Brooklyn, N.Y., February 9th, 1863. Printed at end: Theodore Dwight with added printed note "(A copy of Dr. Bird's letter of January 9th, 1863, was inclosed)". Includes narrative by Theodore Dwight of initially being given a manuscript in Arabic in 1835 from an elderly slave that had been educated and a teacher in Africa. Dwight pursued the acquisition of additional Arabic manuscripts from former Liberian President Joseph J. Roberts and then current Liberian President Stephen Allen Benson that were translated by Isaac Bird and Alexander Cotheal. Dwight expresses the wish that the American Board of Commissioners could be able to provide Arabic translations of their publications to Presidents Benson and Roberts in Liberia for distribution with requests for additional Arabic texts and answers to questions.
