Notes

  • -  Votive cones, or nails, would be placed in the wall of a temple, with only the head of the cone showing for decoration. Very often hundreds would decorate the walls of a temple. This cone is heavily encrusted with much of the inscription illegible. It does, however, have 10 lines, and although most of the signs differ significantly from LC Cuneiform table no. 25, the translation is the same.
  • -  Images, drawings, and transcriptions of the tablets are also available in digital form on the Library of Congress website.
  • -  Content in Sumerian.
  • -  Acquired by the Library of Congress in 1929 from art dealer Kirkor Minassian as part of a collection of Islamic bookbindings, manuscripts, textiles, and ceramic and metal objects illustrating the history of the development of writing and book arts in the Middle East.
