Notes

  • -  Summary: Before his death, William Porter sold one lot in Springfield, Illinois, to Hoffman. Hoffman eventually sold part of his interest to others. Margaret Porter, William Porter's widow, had not released her right to dower in the lot. Porter retained Lincoln and Herndon and sued Hoffman and others for her dower. Hoffman and others failed to appear, and the court ruled for Porter and appointed commissioners, including Herndon, to assign Porter her dower. The commissioners reported that they could not divide the land equitably. The court called a jury to assess the annual value of dower. The jury found that the value was $10 per year. The court ordered Hoffman and successive owners of the lot to pay Porter $10 per year for the rest of her life.
