Biographical Note
David Plowden (b. 1932), a noted documentary photographer and author, graduated from
Yale University in 1955. As a boy, he photographed trains, and his early work
captured the last years of steam locomotives. As a self-employed photographer, he
"made a career of being one step ahead of the wrecking ball." He presented his
images in his own books (about railroads, barns, bridges, small towns, steel, and
the American landscape) and in other publications and many exhibits.
Scope and Content Note
A small collection of images by photographer David Plowden of buildings,
transportation, infrastructure, and rural and urban settings across the United
States and Canada. The photographer provided English language hand-written captions
for each photograph and signed and dated in pencil the backs of each print. These
large-format photographs show details of vernacular architecture buildings such as
barns; rural, small town, industrial, and urban landscape scenes; and transportation
(railroads, ferries, steamships, and roadways). Also includes several portraits. The
images are from more than 30 states in the continental United States and 3 provinces
in Canada.
Arrangement
The photographs are arranged roughly in chronological order.
