Henry Donch was a musician, conductor,
arranger, composer, and educator who lived in Washington, D.C. He led ensembles such as
Donch's Band and Donch's Orchestra and taught violin, flute, clarinet, cornet, guitar,
and banjo at Georgetown University. The collection is primarily comprised of printed and
mansucript sets of parts for society orchestra and band that Donch used with his
professional ensembles as they performed at events in the Washington, D.C., area and at
summer resorts in the nearby mountains. There are also works for chamber ensembles,
method books, and a small amount of miscellanous papers. Please note that the collection

Biographical Note
Henry Donch was born in Hessen, Germany, on October 14, 1834, and moved to the United
States in the mid 1850s. After establishing himself in Philadelphia, he moved to
Annapolis, Maryland, to join the Naval Academy Band and serve as organist in the
Academy's chapel. While in Annapolis, he met and married Elise Brand, originally of
Oldenberg, Germany. Donch then moved his family to Washington, D.C., where he joined the
U.S. Marine Band in August 1862 and served approximately five years. Upon his discharge,
Donch began leading ensembles such as Donch’s Band and Donch’s Orchestra at events
around the city. He also taught at Georgetown University for twenty years, offering
instruction in violin, flute, clarinet, cornet, guitar, and banjo. His professional
ensembles performed at university events including commencement celebrations, club
banquets, public debates, and alumni meetings. Like most ensemble leaders during that
era, Donch owned a large collection of popular music for his ensembles to perform.
Although parts were usually available for purchase, Donch occasionally did his own
arranging. Donch and his wife had nine children: Charles (married Eva Schley), Augusta
(married Albert Lepper), Louise (played piano), John (played violin), William (played
cello and married Sarah "Minnie" McNish), Clara (married Alvin McNish Sr.), and Henry,
Anna, and George Frederick, who died young. Henry Donch died on March 10, 1919, and was
buried in Rock Creek Cemetery.

Scope and Content Note
Materials in the Henry Donch Performance Library date from 1811 to 1928, with the bulk
spanning from 1880 to 1910. The collection is divided into two series, Music and
Miscellany. The [Music](ref_id10001)
series primarily contains parts for small orchestra and band that Donch used with the
ensembles he hired and conducted for society events such as dances, picnics,
graduations, and theatrical productions in Washington, D.C. and at summer resorts during
the Gilded Age, 1870s-1910s. Though most of the works are printed, there are sets of
manuscript parts. Donch occasionally did his own arranging to save money and to allow
him to tailor the music to the players’ abilities and the instrumentation available to
him at any given time.
The Orchestra subseries largely consists of printed sets of parts without scores for
small orchestra. Very few works are written for full orchestral forces. In addition to
popular songs, folk tunes, drinking songs, marches, and dance music, there are medleys,
selections, and "potpourris" of tunes from operas and operettas by composers such as
George M. Cohan, Gaetano Donizetti, Victor Herbert, Gioachino Rossini, Sir Arthur
Sullivan, and Franz von Suppé. The Band subseries chiefly consists of manuscript
arrangements for band and brass band of overtures, marches, dance music, and popular
songs, some of which are drawn from operas and operettas. The Chamber Music subseries
contains music for one to four instruments or voices, including works for piano, voice
or instrument with piano accompaniment, instrumental duets, and quartets. Tunes from
operas and operettas continue to appear in this series, as well as popular songs and
marches. Classical music makes an appearance in this collection with the instrumental
duets and quartets. This subseries contains music with family connections, including the
juvenilia of Donch's son John, a work by his grandson Alvin McNish Jr., and a work
published by his brother William. Method books, etudes, and studies for clarinet,
violin, and double bass comprise the Method Books subseries.
The [Miscellany](ref_id10829) series
contains photographs, a program, and a membership certificate and lyric sheets for the
Washington Saengerbund.
Please note that there are works in this collection with demeaning titles.

Music, 1811-1924
1811-1924
This series includes music, usually just sets of parts, for small orchestra and
band that performed for dances, picnics, graduations, and other events in the
Washington, D.C. region and at summer resorts. Chamber music and method books are
also present.
There are works in this series with demeaning titles.
1-19, 25-34, 36
Orchestra, 1872-1913
1872-1913
This subseries contains music for orchestra, primarily small, society
orchestral ensembles that performed for dances, picnics, graduations,
theatrical productions, and other events in the Washington, D.C., area and at
summer resorts such as Cacapon Springs in West Virginia. Just a small portion
of the music is arranged for full orchestral forces. The majority of works are
represented by printed parts, in many instances augmented by manuscript parts.
Full sets of manuscript parts comprise a few works in this subseries. Scores
are rare; conducting may have been accomplished with a violin or piano part.
The repertoire leans heavily on tunes from operas and operettas in the form of
medleys, selections, and "potpourris" from works such as
The Red Mill
,
Carmen
,
Fatinitza
,
The Barber of Seville
, and
The Mikado
. Also included are popular songs, folk tunes, drinking songs, concert
overtures, marches, waltzes, and other dance music. Of particular interest are
the works by Henry Donch: Melo-dramatic Music, the Yacht Club March, and the
Saengerbund Carnival March, a work that is represented in other subseries.
Works are printed sets of parts unless otherwise noted.
Arranged alphabetically by composer and title therein.

Chamber Music, 1811-1924
1811-1924
This subseries consists of music for one to four instruments or voices. There
are works for piano, voice or instrument with piano accompaniment, instrumental
duets, and quartets. Tunes from operas and operettas continue to appear here,
as well as popular songs and marches. It is with the instrumental duets and
quartets that classical music makes an appearance in this collection. The
colorful scores for piano published by E. T. Paull are notable, as are the
first editions of marches by John Philip Sousa, a contemporary of Donch and
fellow alumnus of the U.S. Marine Band. The music in this series includes
family connections, such as juvenilia of Donch's son John, "The Lovers Song"
and "My Daddy March," and the voice and piano work by Donch's grandson Alvin
McNish Jr., "On the Chesapeake." Donch's brother William published one work in
the subseries, "O Won't You Be My Teddy Bear?" Publication information is
provided below if available on the music.
Arranged alphbetically by composer and title therein.
