Organizational Note
Eye on Dance and Eye on the Arts are two activities of Arts Resources in Collaboration, Inc. (ARC), a non-profit organization founded in 1976 by co-directors Celia Ipiotis and Jeff Bush to advance the public’s access to knowledge about the arts and culture.
Activities of ARC include the creation of 326 programs for the Eye on Dance television series
that began in 1981. These programs are still available by purchase to colleges and
universities. Eye on the Arts consists of electronic and print commentary and
reviews of cultural events in New York City. ARC has been active in the conservation
and preservation of the materials that make up Eye on Dance and Eye on the Arts
programming and materials. ARC maintains a video library and multimedia educational
resources as well as other research materials that informed the ARC programming.
Scope and Content Note
The Celia Ipiotis and Jeff Bush Eye on the Arts Archive is divided into three series:
Programs, Clippings, and Press Kits and Press Releases. Each series is further
identified by a genre: music, dance, theater (including musical theater), and film
and video. Organization of the materials resembles its original order, usually
chronologically by genre. When this has not been possible, materials are organized
by genre and chronologically by decade. The materials date from 1994-2009 and
represent the vast majority of major arts events occurring in New York City during that
timeframe. As the programs and press kits were used by the donors for reference and research, many of the items have annotations or other notes.
The series Programs includes performances of music, musical theatre, plays, dance, mime, multidisciplinary arts, circus, other live events, as well as film. Many of the programs have been annotated or marked. Program inserts, such as cast changes or promotional materials, have been retained with the program.
Among the music performances are orchestral and chamber music,
opera, jazz, and recital events performed at a variety of New York City venues, such
as Aaron Davis Hall; Apollo Theater; B. B. King’s Blues Club and Grill; Baruch
Performing Arts Center; Bouwerie Lane Theatre; Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM);
Carnegie Hall; Florence Gould Hall; French Institute Alliance Française; Guggenheim
Museum; Henry Street Settlement / Abrons Arts Center; Juilliard School of Music; The
Kitchen; Lincoln Center (Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse; Frederick P. Rose Hall; Avery
Fisher Hall, Metropolitan Opera; New York City Opera); Merkin Concert Hall;
Metropolitan Museum of Art; Public Theater; Racquet and Tennis Club; Rubin Museum of
Art; Sylvia and Danny Kaye Playhouse; Symphony Space; Tomkins Square Park/Charlie
Parker Place; Town Hall; and Tribeca Performing Arts Center.
Programs for film include showings and events of the New York Film Critics Circle Awards;
Lincoln Center; Dance on Camera; and Sundance. Theater and musical theater cover
virtually every major performing space in New York City, including 29th Street
Repertory; 2nd Stage Theatre; Barrow Street Theater; Belasco Theatre; Broadhurst
Theatre; Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM); Carnegie Hall; DR2 Theatre; Ethel
Barrymore Theatre; Hilton Theatre; Japan Society; John Golden Theater; La MaMa;
Lincoln Center; Longacre Theater; Marquis Theatre; New York City Center; PS 122;
Public Theatre; Roundabout Theater Company; Royale Theatre; St. James Theatre; and
Theatre at St. Clement’s.
Dance includes events from the Asia Society; Brooklyn
Academy of Music (BAM); Dance Theater Workshop; Danspace; Decapo Opera Theatre;
Everett Center for the Performing Arts; Florence Gould Hall; Guggenheim Museum;
Japan Society; Joyce SoHo; Joyce Theater; The Kitchen; La MaMa; Lincoln Center for
the Performing Arts; Location One; Mark Morris Center; Metropolitan Opera; Miller
Theatre, Columbia University; New Victory Theater; New York City Center; New York
University Skirball Center for Performing Arts; Ohio Theatre; Orensanz Center for
the Arts; Peter Jay Sharp Theater, The Juilliard School; PS 122; Sylvia and Danny
Kaye Playhouse; Symphony Space; and the Walter Kerr Theatre.
The second series Clippings contains reviews and articles related to music, dance, and theater. The third series Press Kits and Press Releases provides promotional information on many of the major performing arts organizations in New York City, such as the American Ballet Theatre; Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company; Martha Graham Dance Company; Merce Cunningham Dance Company; José Limón Dance Company; Pacific Northwest Ballet; and San Francisco Ballet. Some of these items are packets or a set of related items. The Press Kits and Press Releases series for music, theater, film and video are sorted by genre.

Press Kits and Press Releases, 1994-2007
1994-2007
Approximately 4,051 press kits, individual press releases, and related items
Press kits include a range of materials, including features, biographies of artists and other background on the company or performance, occasional publicity photographs, and other items. Many performances are represented only by single-page press releases or a small set of promotional sheets. Some materials include notes made by collection donors.
Press kits and individual press materials are alphabetized by company or artist name for major productions, and otherwise are grouped by genre.
