Custodial History
Shortly after the premiere of Mingus's extended work Epitaph in 1989, the endeavor to bring the Charles Mingus archives to the
Library of Congress Music Division was set in motion. The purchase agreement was signed
on May 21, 1992, marking the Library's first acquisition of a jazz composer's music and
papers.
Accruals
No further accruals are expected.
Processing History
Lloyd A. Pinchback processed the Charles Mingus Collection in 1998. Michael A. Ferrando
coded the finding aid in 2004. Stephanie Akau and Pam Murrell reprocessed the collection
in 2020. This effort included: extensive physical rehousing and rearrangement of
collection materials, especially the business papers; descriptive corrections and
biographical enhancements to the finding aid; and the addition of several Mingus
holograph music manuscripts.

Scope and Content Note
Materials in the Charles Mingus Collection date from 1925 to 2015. The [Music](ead10001) is divided into two subseries. The Music by Charles
Mingus subseries includes holographs, photocopies, and copyist manuscripts of his
original compositions and arrangements of music by others. Numbers are assigned to some
pieces, including his adaptations of works by others, and are indicated by a "Reference
no." label when applicable. For a complete list of Mingus's tunes by reference number,
see [Appendix A](appendixa). Mingus owned the music in the subseries
Music by Others and may have used it for study or his own arrangements.
Mingus founded or co-founded three music business ventures: Charles Mingus Enterprises,
Inc., Debut Records, and Jazz Workshop. Each has its own subseries within the [Business Papers ](ead10752) series. The highlight of this series is the
extensive correspondence that includes the names of prominent jazz figures such as
musicians Sam Most, Max Roach, and Dannie Richmond; record producers Teo Macero and
Clive Davis; and poet Langston Hughes. Within each subseries are also records of income
and expenses, cash disbursements, and receipts.
The [Personal Papers](ead11309) consist of notes in Mingus's hand and
letters, greeting cards, and personal notes from family members, including his sister
Grace Mingus, second wife Celia Mingus, and widow Sue Mingus. Financial, legal, and
medical papers, as well as maps, receipts, and brochures from his extensive travels make
up the rest of the series. There are also writings by others in this series that were
inspired by Mingus’s music or inscribed to him. The realia include Mingus's tarot cards,
a lock of hair from son Eric's first haircut, and a book titled
Cultivation of Personal Magnetism in Seven Progressive Steps
with the mid-section carved out to house Mingus's firearm.
Most of the [Project Files](ead11080) consist of Mingus’s annotated
drafts of his autobiography,
Beneath the Underdog
. The scripts and production summaries, organized by producer name, are from
films in which Mingus appeared, composed the score, or contributed music. Typescript
liner notes, correspondence regarding various projects, and other short writings are
also included.
The [Clippings](ead11106) series primarily contains articles and
reviews relating to his albums, autobiography, and the Mingus Dynasty, the New
York-based jazz orchestra established after his death as a tribute to him and his
contributions in music. Articles about his widow are also included in this series. Some
clippings have been photocopied due to the original items' deteriorating physical
condition. There are also full issues of magazines owned by Mingus or those that contain
articles about him.
The [Publicity and Programs](ead11264) are divided into two file
groups. The first consists of Charles Mingus’s and Debut Records musicians’ biographies,
concert announcements, posters, and album advertisements. The programs are from Mingus’s
performances or performances of his music by others, primarily from the 1970s.
The [Iconography](ead11297) series contains photographs, negatives,
album cover art, and one piece of artwork. The photographs and negatives are images of
Mingus and his family, as well as photographs of fellow musicians such as Eric Dolphy,
Dannie Richmond, Max Roach, Oscar Pettiford, and Miles Davis. The [Awards](ead11347) contain plaques and certificates for several of Mingus's wins and
nominations, notably his 1973 Grammy Award nomination for
Let My Children Hear Music
.

Music, 1930-1995
1930-1995
The Music series consists of two subseries. The first is Music by Charles Mingus,
which contains manuscripts and photocopied scores, lead sheets, and parts. Because
Mingus eventually stopped using notated parts, many folders contain only brief
melodic lead sheets. Also included are arrangements of his compositions by Sy
Johnson and Jaki Byard and music for which Mingus wrote the lyrics. This subseries
also contains holograph scores for
Epitaph
, a two-hour jazz work that Mingus composed throughout his life, as well
as several arrangements for Mingus Dynasty, a band assembled by Sue Mingus of
Mingus’s former colleagues to continue performing his compositions. The most
recent additions to this subseries are four holograph scores for
Alive and Living in Dukeland
,
Cumbia and Jazz Fusion
,
Three or Four Shades of Blue
, and
Todo Modo
. Reference numbers are assigned to some pieces, including his adaptations
of works by others. His original works and his arrangements of others' works share
one numerical sequence and are listed as “Reference no.” when they are available.
The list of Mingus reference numbers is available in [Appendix A](appendixa). The Music by Others subseries contains manuscript scores of
music by numerous composers that Mingus owned or may have arranged.
A microfilm edition of the Music series is available on 9 reels that are shelved as Microfilm 2011/20001 (Mus). Please consult the microfilm inventory in the collection file to determine the reel number for each work. To promote preservation of the originals, researchers are encouraged to consult the microfilm edition.

Business Papers, 1946-1978
1946-1978
The Business Papers Series is divided into three subseries: Charles Mingus
Enterprises, Inc., Debut Records, and Jazz Workshop. Mingus founded Charles Mingus
Enterprises, Inc. to record his albums and fulfill record orders through the mail
rather than through distributors. This subseries contains correspondence, records
of expenses, financial papers, royalties statements, record orders, and travel
documents from Mingus’s national and international tours.
Debut Records was a label co-founded by Mingus, Celia Mingus, and Max Roach that
officially incorporated in 1952. Though the label closed only five years later,
they recorded and produced early albums by jazz musicians such as Hazel Scott,
Hank Mobley, and Miles Davis. The label’s most ambitious project was Jazz at Massey Hall, a three-volume recording featuring
"The Quintet” of Mingus, Max Roach, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, and Dizzy
Gillespie, and a trio made up of Mingus, Powell, and Roach. The Debut Records
subseries is the most extensive of the Business Papers series. It contains
artists’ files, which consist of headshots, correspondence, contracts, and
publicity; correspondence to and from Debut Records; contracts, licenses, and
royalties statements; expense records and receipts; fulfilled and unfulfilled
record orders; and travel documents that include receipts, itineraries, and
contact lists.
Mingus founded Jazz Workshop in 1955 as a music publishing company so he could
maintain control and rights over his compositions. Jazz Workshop was also the name
of a rotating ensemble that included musicians such as Charles McPherson, Jaki
Byard (who also arranged for the group), Dannie Richmond, and Jimmy Knepper. In
addition to performing and recording albums, the Jazz Workshop ensemble played
music by young composers so they could hear their music played by a live ensemble.
The subseries contains contracts, correspondence, and financial papers.

Jazz Workshop, 1958-1978
1958-1978
Mingus founded Jazz Workshop in 1955 as a music publishing company so he could
maintain control and rights over his compositions. Jazz Workshop was also the
name of a rotating ensemble that included musicians such as Charles McPherson,
Jaki Byard (who also arranged for the group), Dannie Richmond, and Jimmy
Knepper. In addition to performing and recording albums, the Jazz Workshop
ensemble played music by young composers so they could hear their music played
by a live ensemble. The subseries contains contracts, correspondence, and
financial papers.

This series contains materials from Charles Mingus's life outside his three
businesses, though it contains similar documents: correspondence, financial
papers, legal papers, medical records, and records of expenses, such as invoices
and receipts. Unlike the Business Papers Series, the travel documents in this
series are mostly brochures and maps and do not contain itineraries. The files
series “Inscribed Material” consists of books whose authors inscribed their work
to Mingus. “Realia” contains Mingus’s tarot cards, hair from his son Eric’s first
haircut, and Cultivation of Personal Magnetism in Seven
Progressive Steps, a book with pages cut out to store his firearm.
Arranged alphabetically by format or author.

Clippings, 1950-1996, undated
1950-1996, undated
Album advertisements, Mingus’s and Debut Records artists’ concert and album
reviews, and periodicals comprise the Clippings series. Most of the clippings
concern concerts, including those Mingus gave in Europe and Asia, or biographical
exposés. Mingus kept periodicals and articles about major historical events or
articles on topics of personal interest, which are included in this series. Some
clippings have been photocopied due to physical deterioration. The series is
divided into two file groups: [Articles](ead11190a), which are
single articles cut or photocopied from newspapers or magazines, and [Periodicals](ead11190b), which contain entire magazines. Several
articles are posthumous tributes to Mingus published after his death in 1979.

Iconography, circa
1940-2015
circa 1940-2015
Photographs of Charles Mingus, his family, friends, and colleagues comprise the
majority of the Iconography Series. The first subseries of photographs and
negatives are of Charles Mingus alone, with other musicians, or with his family.
The photographs of other musicians are candid images or headshots of jazz
musicians that include Eric Dolphy, Duke Ellington, Maynard Ferguson, and Artie
Shaw, among others, as well as negatives and photo-postcards. There is one piece
of artwork in this subseries, the painting “Space Soul” by Elliott Cola. Cola’s
music is located in the “Music by Others” subseries of the Music Series.
Cover Art contains artwork for several Mingus albums, among them Tijuana Moods, Changes One and
Two, and Mingus at Monterey. There is also
cover art for albums by Debut Records artists Jimmy Knepper, Thad Jones, and Max
Roach.
Arranged alphabetically.
