Organizational History
The oldest of the five Guggenheim foundations, the Daniel and Florence Guggenheim
Foundation was established on January 14, 1924, as a charitable institution to support
education, the arts, and medicine. After the dissolution of the Daniel Guggenheim Fund
for the Promotion of Aeronautics in 1930, the foundation continued sponsorship in the
field of aviation and rocketry funding major advances in aviation safety and the
rocketry research of rocket pioneer Robert Hutchings Goddard. In 1972, the foundation
turned its attention to the criminal justice field, and for the next thirty-eight years
funded research at Harvard University, Princeton University, University of California,
Berkeley, and Yale Law School, and community criminal justice programs. The foundation
was dissolved on June 30, 2011.
Scope and Content Note
The records of the Daniel and Florence Guggenheim Foundation span the years 1924-2010,
with the bulk of the material dating from 1980 to 2008. The records relate to the
foundation's involvement in aviation and rocketry from the 1930s and in criminal justice
from 1972 to 2010.
The aviation and rocketry files are comprised largely of material relating to litigation
involving the patents of Robert Hutchings Goddard and exhibitions at the National Air
and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Between 1930 and
1941, the foundation financed the rocketry work of Goddard. In 1960 the foundation was
awarded a settlement by the United States government for infringing upon Goddard's
patent for liquid fuel rockets. At the National Air and Space Museum, the foundation
funded many projects and exhibits as well as donating the early rockets used by Goddard.
The criminal justice files reflect the foundation's funding of research and programs
that helped reform sentencing procedures, examined human rights violations in prisons,
developed alternatives to incarceration for at-risk youths, and started prerelease
planning for incarcerated women, transitional residences, and training for leaders in
neighborhoods. A majority of the programs and projects took place in New York and
California.
Information on the inner workings of the foundation is found in meeting minutes. They
also contain the certificate of incorporation, bylaws and subsequent changes,
correspondence, and financial and other reports. Supplementing the minutes are financial
ledgers and reports of the presidents.
