Provenance
The microfilm collection of the Western Range Cattle and Other Industries Study Papers was received by the Library of Congress from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1956. The microfilm was sent to the Library as part of an agreement with Herbert O. Brayer, state archivist of Colorado. In the late 1940s Brayer surveyed sources pertinent to American economic history in various European repositories. The Library defrayed some of the expenses and received a copy of the microfilm of material selected by Brayer.
Processing History
A finding aid to the Western Range Cattle and Other Industries Study Papers was created in 1999 and revised in 2012.

Scope and Content Note
The papers on the microfilm edition of the Western Range Cattle and Other industries
Study Collection span the years 1823-1947, with the bulk of the material concentrated in
the period 1880-1920. The collection includes incorporation agreements, stockholder
lists, journals, correspondence, maps, photographs, and printed matter relating to the
cattle industry in Colorado, Kansas, Texas, and other areas and the Matador Land and
Cattle Company, Swan Land and Cattle Company, and the Prairie Cattle Company. The
microfilm is organized into two series: [
Cattle Industry Files
](cattle)
and [
Mining and Other Business Files
](mining).
The majority of the material was reproduced from the originals in the Registrar of
Companies Office in Edinburgh, Scotland. A reproduction of the index to companies
register (1856-1920) from the Registrar of Companies in London, England, is found on
Reel 22. Reels 23-28 contain material relating to the cattle industry reproduced from
the Registrar of Companies Office in London. Reels 29-34 reproduce Moreton Frewen's
Ranch Papers (1823-1932), the originals of which are in the Special Collections
Division, University of North Dakota Library, Grand Forks, North Dakota. These papers
supplement Frewen's personal papers in the Library of Congress and deal with his
activities in conjunction with the Powder River Cattle Company in Johnson County,
Wyoming.
Reels 35-75 contain material relating primarily to mining. This material, reproduced
from originals in the files of the Registrar of Companies, Bush House, London, England,
consists mainly of articles of agreement, stockholder lists, and summaries of capital
and shares.
