Scope and Content Note
The papers of John Boynton Philip Clayton Hill (1879-1941) span the years 1906-1938. The
collection is comprised of scrapbooks chiefly of newspaper clippings compiled or kept by
Hill from early in his career as an attorney and politician in Maryland through the
years of his public and professional service, including during World War I, as
congressman from the third congressional district of Maryland, 1921-1927, and as a
lawyer in private practice in New York from the late 1920s until 1938.
The scrapbooks feature events in Hill’s own career and life, but are generally of a
broader focus in reflecting the places and times in which he lived. Subjects of
prominence include World War I and prohibition; political developments and legal issues
in Maryland; economic and social issues nationally in the 1920s and 1930s; and foreign
affairs, especially in Europe in the 1930s.
Arrangement of the Papers
The papers are organized chronologically by volume as created by Hill.
