The papers of Warren Gamaliel Harding (1865-1923) span the years 1908-1926. The papers include correspondence, speeches, a subject file, a scrapbook, and a miscellany file. The papers were gathered by the Library over the years through various gifts and purchases to form a Harding collection. The general correspondence includes letters written by Harding and some carbon copies of letters sent to Harding. Some letters are photostats or typed copies. The correpondence includes some senatorial and presidential letters, including letters to Calvin Coolidge, Harry S. New, and to Brother Joseph Dutton at the leper colony in Hawaii. Constituent mail addresses various issues including the contentious issue of the United States entering the world war. The general correspondence file also has personal letters to friends and family including letters to his sister, Carolyn Harding Votaw. Harding's estate papers and items from his memorial services as well as campaign materials, including two posters from the 1920 presidential campaign, are filed in the miscellany section. Florence Kling Harding's letters to Catherine New, wife of Harry S. New, are also in the miscellany section. The subject file includes material about Armistice Day, documenting events commemorating the end of the war as well as the the movement to make Novemeber 11 an official holiday. Also in the subject file is material pertaining to the importation of sugar from Argentina instigated by the Department of Justice with the P. De Ronde & Co., and bound volumes with names of invitees to White House events in 1922.
