The papers of John Toland, author and historian, were given to the Library of Congress by Toland in 1967-1968, with the exception of audiotapes transferred to the Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division, which are on deposit.
The collection was processed by Paul G. Sifton in 1968. The finding aid was revised in 2013.
Items have been transferred from the Manuscript Division to other custodial divisions of the Library. Some photographs have been transferred to the Library's Prints and Photographs Division where they are identified as part of these papers. Audiotapes have been transferred to the Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division. All transfers are identified in these divisions as part of the John Toland Papers.
Copyright in the unpublished writings of John Toland in these papers and in other collections of papers in the custody of the Library of Congress has been dedicated to the public.

The papers of John Willard Toland (1912-2004) span the years 1944-1965. The collection consists of correspondence, notes, interviews, military reports, reminiscences, maps, photographs, and wide ranging production material, including drafts, galleys, and proofs, of Toland's books on World War II and gangsterism in the 1930s. The papers are organized according to title of work plus General Correspondence and Oversize series.
