Organizational History
Food for Freedom, Inc., was founded in 1943 by Harold Weston
(1894-1972), a modernist painter who devoted his work during the World War II
period to combating hunger among refugees in Europe and Asia. He lobbied
Eleanor Roosevelt with the idea of building a national coalition of
organizations to provide humanitarian aid to starving peoples, and was credited
by her for helping bring about the United National Relief and Rehabilitation
Administration.

The records of Food for Freedom, Inc., span the years 1942-1947 and
consist of correspondence, notes, memoranda, reports, articles, minutes, news
releases, reprints, clippings, cartoons, mailing lists, speeches, and other
material, including the manuscript for "Battle of Bread" by the organization’s director, Harold Weston.
