The autograph collection of William Tappan (born 1863) spans the years 1640-1939, with the bulk of the material concentrated in the period 1800-1900. The collection includes correspondence, miscellaneous documents, prints, poetry, rare printed matter, photographs, and some letters to Tappan, chiefly autographic in nature.
The greatest of the portion of the collection relates to the Baltimore-Washington, D.C., area from the War of 1812 through the early twentieth century. Samuel Smith (1752-1839), congressman, governor, and mayor of Baltimore, is a frequent correspondent. Other letters or items are from John C. Calhoun, Josephus Daniels, Robert Gilmor, Edward Everett Hale, Robert Goodloe Harper, John Eager Howard, Edward Ingle, and Israel Thorndike. The oldest item is an autograph note in Dutch by the painter Sir Anthony Van Dyck.
