The papers of Mabel Walker Willebrandt, lawyer and public official, were given to the
Library of Congress by her daughter, Dorothy Rae Willebrandt Van Dyke, 1980-1987.
Processing History
The papers of Mabel Walker Willebrandt were arranged and described in 1983. The finding
aid was revised in 2010. The finding aid was updated in 2024 by Maria Farmer as part of
a division-wide remediation project by the Inclusive Description Working Group.

Scope and Content Note
The papers of Mabel Walker Willebrandt (1889-1963) span the years 1881-1978, with the
bulk from 1921 to 1929. The collection consists of correspondence, speeches, writings,
family papers, and printed matter relating primarily to Willebrandt’s service as United
States assistant attorney general under Presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin
Coolidge. The correspondence includes letters to Willebrandt’s parents and pertains
chiefly to social and political life in Washington, her efforts as an enforcer of the
Eighteenth Amendment, Republican Party politics, and the issue and role of women in
politics. Also included is a file concerning the Haystack Massacre of 1888.
