Scope and Content Note
The papers of Daniel E. Sickles (1819-1914) span the years 1821-1918.
The collection consists of correspondence, speeches, documents, legal and
financial records, clippings, and printed matter. Included are drafts of
reports to the secretary of state while Sickles was serving as minister to
Spain (1869-1873) relating, in part, to the Cuban Insurrection and to the
Virginius affair. Other topics include Sickles's
service as chairman (1886-1912) of the New York Monuments Commission for the
Battlefields of Gettysburg and Chattanooga and as a member of the House of
Representative in the 53rd Congress. Correspondents include Sickles's father,
