Scope and Content Note
The papers of Wallace Humphrey White (1877-1952) date from 1915 to 1948 and relate
mainly to the period 1917-1931 when he served in Congress as representative from the
Second District of Maine. This period is covered by a [Departmental File](departfile) of correspondence
with executive agencies of the government. A [Subject File](subfile) and [Legislative File](legfile), both of which span the period 1925-1948,
pertain to matters such as radio and communications, merchant marine and maritime
affairs, fisheries, conservation, tariffs, the St. Lawrence Seaway, immigration,
neutrality, interstate commerce, the Passamaquoddy Tidal Project, national defense,
taxes, and veterans' benefits.
Correspondence is lacking for the period 1931-1949 when White served as United States
Senator. A series of [scrapbooks](scrapb) from 1915 to 1948 contains clippings on White's activities in local
