Scope and Content Note
The papers of Alexander Freud (1866-1943) and Sophie Schreiber Freud
(1878-circa 1965) span the years 1872-1965 and consist of correspondence,
subject files, and a manuscript of a writing by Alexander Freud. Most of the
material came to the Library of Congress with the papers of Alexander and
Sophie Schreiber Freud's son, Harry Freud, nephew of Sigmund Freud.
Alexander Freud was the younger brother of Sigmund Freud. Featured in
the papers are his siblings and relatives, with the focus on the period
1938-1943, when the Nazi takeover of Austria and Central Europe forced
Alexander Freud and his family to flee to England and then to North America.
There is some material concerning his interest in the publishing firm
Allgemeiner Tarif-Anzeiger, but the bulk of the collection concentrates on the
personal situations of Freud family members who were dispersed by World War II
and Nazi persecution.
Important or frequent correspondents include the Freuds's son Harry
and Alexander's sisters, Adolphine Freud, Marie Freud, Rosa Freud Graf, and
Pauline Freud Winternitz. A few items pertain to Alexander's parents, Jacob
Freud and Amalia Nathanson Freud. Additional correspondents include Anna Freud
Bernays, Edward L. Bernays, Wilhelm Fliess, and Martha Bernays Freud. Also in
the collection is a death mask of Alexander Freud.
