Biographical Note
Edwin A. Halsey was born Sept. 4, 1881, near Lynchburg, Virginia. He attended Virginia
Polytechnic Institute and was appointed a page in the press gallery of the United States
Senate, 1897. After advancing through a series of increasingly responsible positions in
the Senate and within the Democratic Party, Halsey served a secretary-treasurer of the
Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee from the 1920s to 1944 and was elected
secretary of the Senate in 1933. Halsey died in Washington, D.C., Jan. 29, 1945.
Scope and Content Note
The papers of Edwin Alexander Halsey (1881-1945) span the years 1930-1946 and consist of
correspondence, clippings, printed and near-print material, financial records, campaign
papers, and other material relating to Halsey's duties as secretary of the Senate and to
various Democratic campaigns. The papers are organized into the following series: [ Senate Correspondence File
](senate), [ General Correspondence
](gencorr), and [ Miscellany ](misc).
The [ Senate Correspondence File
](senate) relates chiefly to Halsey's duties as secretary of the Senate, and although the
series also contains some items concerning his activities as secretary-treasurer of the
Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the [ General Correspondence ](gencorr) series more fully documents this
aspect of his career. The [
Miscellany ](misc) series further reflects the operations and campaigns of the
Democratic Party and its senatorial campaign committee under Halsey's leadership.
