Charles H. Rogers was born at Bridgehampton, New York, in 1806. As a young man he relocated to Galena, Illinois, where he became a merchant and interested himself in the lead mines and a banking house. It is in Galena that Rogers probably met the Grant family. Returning to New York a wealthy man, Rogers established himself in business and married Mary Post in 1836. He died on September, 20, 1880, at his residence in Ravenswood, New York.
The papers of the Charles H. Rogers family span the years 1858-1930, with the bulk of the material dated during the period 1858-1896. The papers are primarily those of Charles H. Rogers (1806-1880) and his wife and include calling cards, correspondence, military orders and passes, notes, and a photograph. Rogers was a New York financier and a friend of Ulysses S. Grant. The papers include personal correspondence from Grant, his wife Julia Dent Grant, and other members of the Grant family, including Ulysses S. Grant (1852-1929), Nellie Grant Sartoris, Fannie E. Grant, and Orvil L. Grant. The Grant correspondence primarily concerns family matters and social engagements during Grant's residency in the White House, 1869-1877, and his world tour, 1877-1879. Other correspondents are Orville Elias Babcock, Adam Badeau, Julia Sands Bryant, William Cullen Bryant, John A. Rawlins, J. C. Smith, and E. B. Washburne. Smith's correspondence details the Civil War activities of the Ninety-sixth Illinois Volunteer Regiment, in which he served as an officer. Other Civil War material includes a photograph of Grant and military passes authorizing Rogers and his son, John Rogers, passage and transportation within the Union military district.
This collection is arranged alphabetically by type of material.
