The records of the Presbytery of Washington City span the years 1823-1950 and include records of two predecessor organizations, the Presbytery of the District of Columbia, 1823-1870, and the Presbytery of the Potomac, 1858-1870. The two presbyteries combined in 1870 to form the Presbytery of Washington City, a precursor of the present presbytery, the National Capital Presbytery.
These records consist of the proceedings of the presbyteries. Churches documented in Maryland include congregations in Bethesda, Bladensburg, Darnestown, First Constitutional Church in Baltimore, Granite, Lisbon, Mount Airy, Poolesville, Quarries, Ridge (Carroll County), Rockville, and the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. Virginia churches documented include those in Alexandria, Falls Church, and Lewinsville. Several Presbyterian churches in the District of Columbia are also documented.
The proceedings record the response of the presbyteries to the Civil War, World War I, the influenza epidemic of 1918-1919, the Great Depression, and World War II. An historical volume at the end of the collection summarizes the events and trends reflected by the proceedings.
This collection is arranged chronologically.
