The papers of Alden Partridge, U.S. Army officer, engineer, educator, and state legislator from Vermont were purchased by the Library of Congress in 1967. Additional material was acquired through gift and purchase, 1966-1986.

The papers of Alden Partridge (1785-1854) span the years 1807-1959, with the bulk of the material dated between 1817 and 1842. They include correspondence, papers relating to Partridge's court-martial, a library journal, notes, lists, student rolls, and printed matter.
Correspondence to Partridge from students and their parents relates to educational matters at the United States Military Academy and other academies with which Partridge was associated, including the American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy at Norwich, Vermont, which was later incorporated into Norwich University. Letters and copies of letters written by Partridge include several to James Monroe.
The papers also include material concerning military activities during the War of 1812 and a dispute between Sylvanus Thayer and Partridge over control of the United States Military Academy. The addition is made up of three letters to Partridge, including letters from Levi Woodbury and Oliver Wolcott (1760-1833).
