Collection material in English, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Portuguese and Spanish.
The following terms have been used to index the description of this collection in the LC Catalog. They are grouped by name of person or organization, by subject or location, and by occupation and listed alphabetically.
Ethel M. Fair donated subject index cards in 1960 and the collection in 1973.
The Ethel M. Fair collection was described by Walter Ristow in 1973. In 2011, Kim Edwin arranged, described (including adding numerous annotations), and foldered the materials. In 2014, Ryan Moore provided edits and updates, and refined the arrangement.
The status of copyright of the Ethel M. Fair collection is governed by the Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, U.S.C.).
The Ethel M. Fair collection is open to research. Researchers are advised to contact the Geography & Map Reading Room prior to visiting. Many collections are stored off-site and advance notice is needed to retrieve these items for research use.
Researchers wishing to cite this collection should include the following information: Container number, Ethel M. Fair collection, Geography & Map Division, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.
Consists chiefly of twentieth-century pictorial maps, views, and facsimiles collected by map librarian Ethel M. Fair (1884-1979). Formats include place mats, napkins, postcards, Christmas cards, blotters, table cloths, handkerchiefs, and bookplates. Maps are from around the world with an emphasis on North America.
Accompanied by portrait, professional information, obituary, and photocopy of article about the collection.
The collection is organized into a single series. The maps are arranged according to Fair's numbering system (EMF). Within the G&M Reading Room is a set of subject cards that can be used to browse the collection. The maps range in numbers from 1 to 902; however, there are only 889 maps. Whether maps are missing or if Fair skipped numbers is unascertained.
