Notes

  • -  Interview with Chris Betts and Nick Doris at the Hot Grill, Clifton, NJ.
  • -  ND: The FVG served sauce, mustard, and onion only. When the HG opened in 1961 in Clifton, it was far enough away from the Paterson Falls-are geographic core of the tradition [maybe 3 miles] that people didn't know what a HTW was. So in 1962, at the time of the HG's first expansion, they held a grand opening. From 10 AM until 2 AM the next day they gave each person one free HTW. 40 people served 14,000 wieners that day: people came back for seconds, etc. But it introduced a great many people to the food.
