  • -  Summary of audio segment: Do Peruvians who come here have an interest in becoming US citizens? Most of them try to become citizens, to be more secure, to be able to call their families from Peru. So a lot of families come here -- first the husband, then the wife, then the children. This is the main reason to come here. They usually come to the US, stay for 5 years, then return to Peru. This is the average. They go back to see their families, having gotten their green cards in the US, then return to the US with their families. It takes 5 years. When AC came here stayed 1 or 2 years working hard, to get money. Then after that time they looked into the possibility of getting papers to become legal residents here. It took another 2 years for that. It takes 5 years to be legal here, after that they go to Peru, get theirfamilies, and return. But it is the economic conditions that force them to leave Peru, not the political conditions there. Because politically it's not bad over there. If you're against the government, they don't look for you [persecute you]. It's the economic conditions. The dream is to come to the US, but they go to other places -- Argentina, Venezuela, Spain, England, and now Japan. In Japan the language is very difficult, but they go there and they learn. And we do a lot of things that we don't do in Peru. Don't know how, but we do it.
