Notes

  • -  Interview with Francisco "Arturo" Mantilla, co-owner of Elsa's Fashions on 21st Avenue.
  • -  Summary of audio segment: AM was 22 in 1970 when he arrived here. Lived with brother at 563 River Street, a very old, small house. Very small, 2 or 3 room apartment. His brother's friends helped him get work. One Puerto Rican friend took Arturo and found a job for him, in Fair Lawn, for a shoe company. Worked for $1.25 an hour, took home $65-$68 dollars a week. Paid rent to his brother, paid for food, and sent the rest to his father in Ecuador. The company made ladies' shoes. A big factory, 200 or 300 people worked there. It was very easy to find work in 1970, could get a job in one day. The Puerto Rican friend didn't work there, but he took AM around to Hackensack and Fair Lawn to look. AM didn't have a car then, so took a bus to work. It was easy to get there.
