Notes

  • -  Interview with retired dye-house worker and textile union official Marianna Costa at her home in Haledon, New Jersey.
  • -  Summary of audio segment: Marianna worked in shipping department at Arrow Piece Dye Works for a year; she then became involved with the union. They immediately picked two people from the crowd to represent the plant. They had daily shop meetings in Turn Hall or at 28 Cross Street, across the street. Two people, three people from every shop. The shop steward plus two delegates to represent the plant. And from this entire delegation they picked a negotiating committee and a temporary president, vice president, and a strike chairman . . . . Strikers met every day for seven weeks. During the strike, Marianna went to Washington, D.C., as part of a delegation to lobby for legislation for a silk code; this established guidelines for the industry.
