  • -  Henry Reed said that "Shoes and Stockings" was a tune of Quince Dillion's (see his discussion preceding the performance of "New Castle," AFS 13705b15). The title may possibly link the tune to the song "His Old Shoes and His Leggings," some Southern versions of which resemble this tune, but no clear correlation can be made. This tune bears some resemblance to another tune in Henry Reed's repertory, usually known by the title "Jordan Is a Hard Road to Travel" (AFS 13705b24). It is an interesting performance, played in what might be called a spare melodic style with few sixteenth notes and a lot of quarter and eighth notes. A recording of the tune, learned from Henry Reed, on the album Sandy's Fancy (Flying Fish FF-260) gave "Shoes and Stockings" some renewed circulation in the old-time music revival. The first fifty seconds of this tune were recorded on the 2/3 track, then the machine was switched to the 1/4 track mid-tune. Note that a small portion of the tune was not recorded during the switching of the tracks.
