Notes

  • -  Recorded by Archibald A. Hill and Guy S. Lowman, Virginia, May 7, 1935?
  • -  On jacket and incised on disc: "Original - 1935"; and name, and age of informant. On jacket: "7 of May" "Hill & Lowman Original 1935" "Master Copy" "A fair B poor". Although there is no documentation of the race and occupational background of this informant, various topics in this series of records indicate that she had been a house servant/slave and cook on a place called "Providence Hall". Information from daughter given on ADS 1385 indicates that this informant has recently moved to the area where recording was made. Interviewer on that disc refers to "Aunt Becky", ADS 1371-1373, as if both Sarah and Elrue Garner know her; probably this disc was recorded in same area, i.e., near Oldham, Westmoreland Co. VA. On end of ADS 1400, Side A, recorded in Oak Grove, Westmoreland Co., VA, interviewer (AH) comments about talking with local black woman named "Aunt Sarah", probably referring to ADS 1382-1383.
