About this Item

Title

  • Lizeth interview conducted by Nubia, 2016-07-13.

Summary

  • Nubia, housecleaning day-laborer and activist, interviews fellow housecleaning day-laborer and activist Lizeth [surnames withheld by request]. Like other interviews in this collection, their discussion focuses on the following themes: her biographical and background information; domestic workers' overview of their work inside their employer's homes and how they frame it as "real work"; how the domestic workforce negotiates and balances their work in other people's homes with the needs and demands of own homes and personal lives; their relationship to Domestic Workers United and the movement for domestic workers' rights; and the community of workers that has been created through the DWU organization. Unlike many of the interviewees, Liseth is not part of Domestic Workers United; instead, she is affiliated with a sister organization, The Worker's Justice Project (WJP). The WJP is a Brooklyn-based worker center that addresses the racial and economic injustice faced by day-laborers and domestic workers by "building collective power and creating solutions to the problems our members experience at work and in communities where they live." The interview was conducted in Spanish and translated and transcribed into English by Etta Barrman. For Lizeth's interview of Nubia, see afc2015027_03340.
