About this Item

Title

  • Nubia interview conducted by Lizeth, 2016-07-13.

Summary

  • Lizeth, housecleaning day-laborer and activist, interviews fellow domestic worker and day-laborer Nubia [surnames withheld by request]. The women are not affiliated with Domestic Workers United directly, but are part of the Workers' Justice Project. Both women are day-laborers. Each morning, they wait for work on a street corner in Brooklyn hoping to be hired. Their corner is one of only two known women day-laborer corners in the country. Employers, many of them Hasidic women, come to the corner and hire them to clean their homes or stores, usually negotiating for 2-6 hour work shifts. Although usually hired to do house work, both women have also been picked up as emergency nannies, restaurant worker subs, and even factory workers. This interview is conducted in Spanish, but has been translated into English. For an interview of Lizeth conducted by Nubia, see afc2015027_03401.
